It is non-invasive physical treatment of the body and addresses problems that are due to abnormalities in the musculo-skeletal system.
Patients may have suffered a trauma or more commonly become aware of an ever increasing ache and pain.
I am a manual therapist and mainly use mobilisations and massage to loosen up stiff joints and release soft tissues. However I have electrotherapy equipment which I use where appropriate to aid the healing.
I also give advice on maintenance and give/teach home programmes specific to the individual which are vital to improve and prevent recurrence.
Carol qualified at St Mary's Hospital in 1989. Over the years she gained extensive experience in orthopaedics and musculo-skeletal care working in hospitals, sports injury clinics, an occupational health department, rugby clubs and an elderly care home. She regularly attends courses and seminars to continue her professional development.
Carol deals with a wide range of conditions and joints and her particular interest now is in the treatment and management of long standing back/neck problems.

It is essential to identify the structure(s) responsible for the problem and discover why the problem has arisen. This is done by taking a detailed history and examining all the relevant structures. Only then can safe and effective treatment be performed.
Physiotherapy is a hands-on approach involving manipulation of joints and mobilisation of soft tissues, in addition using modern electrotherapy modalities such as ultrasound and laser if necessary.
There seems little point in relieving pain only for it to repeatedly return. The long-term goal is therefore to try and reduce the chance of reoccurrence. This may involve strengthening/stretching exercises, looking at posture, and ergonomic advice.
